Music

Music is part of the creative/aesthetic group called The Arts which contains various manifestations of human expression. It is a sound based art form which uses rhythm, pitch and melody in order to create a harmonious structure. Music can either be vocal based i.e. sung as a solo or as a group, or instrumental, for example, a classical string quartet. It affects the mind to the extent of causing strong emotions in people who may describe a piece of music as moving or mood enhancing.

Music is often tied in with atmosphere: it can be used to create a certain type of atmosphere, for example, a lively, upbeat state at a party or a slow, relaxed situation at a romantic candlelit dinner. Music can be seen as a series of beats per minute. This beats per minute refers to the tempo and can be compared to the human heartbeat. The tempo of a piece of music can affect this heartbeat ranging from 60 to 80 beats per minute for a relaxing piece, such as a classical symphony through to 120 beats per minute for a energetic techno dance piece.

Music encompasses a wide range of styles, from rock to country and western, easy listening to rhythm and blues, and Spanish guitar to rap. It can be listened to in a variety of formats such as a live concert, online, CD or the radio and is enjoyed by people from all walks of life.
